(Public Utilities)

For two years I was fortunate enough to live in the small village of Taraclia, Moldova. Life for people in Europe’s poorest nation can be very difficult. The majority of families live off of remittances sent from abroad. At 65 those who do have jobs in the country are forced to retire and must begin a life of subsistence farming because their pension is not enough off which to survive. Despite the hardship, life here is beautiful and the people are much happier than those in other parts of the world. “We have the greatest public utility of all,” my host once told me, “fresh air.”
