Colombia’s peace deal is lauded and feared in equal parts by the people of Gaitania, the town in which the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) was founded. In November 24, 2016, the Colombian government ratified a peace deal with the FARC to end a 52 year long armed conflict. Marquetalia, a small farming community in Gaitania, is where the FARC was born. It is here that Colombians experienced first hand the violence both the government and the guerrilla army were capable of. Newly vulnerable, Gaitania eagerly awaits that which the government has promised as part of the deal, and plans for an uncertain future.
